Computer Training

When the weather is too cold and wet to play outdoors, sit inside and upgrade your skills with the master.

Co-operative Computer Clinic and Courses

At The Commons, in your office, in your home, or in mine. Your choice.

Training is delivered at cost: How much does a course cost?

CPRGreaves@GMail.com VOICE: 709-218-7927

What does "Co-operative" mean?

It means that together, we work. I work, and you work.

In both the clinics and the training courses especially you work.

Of special interest to me is that you do most of the work!

Give me an example

Suppose you want to learn about Excel. You ask me to deliver a course on Excel. Of course! Not a problem!

But I tell you that a course needs four people on it to make the training effective, so you round up three other people, you contact the facility (for example the Chamber of Commerce) and book the dates and times and the meeting room; you pay the Chamber directly for the room rental and the cost of the printed course notes, and then you contact me and tell me when to show up and deliver the training.

I don't have to do any paperwork, I don't do any book-keeping of money and accounts. My dreams come true!

Classroom Training Courses

… are held in The Commons.

Doors open fifteen minutes before class.

Classes start on the dot, and finish on the dot,

How do I know which course is right for me?

Prerequisites: Most applications courses require prior completion of “Windows for Professional Users”

Alan B. Callahmer’s game of management and communication skills. No element of luck at all. Uses a map of Europe pre-first-Balkan war. A seven-sided chess board, seven players, three “kings” each. To win, a player must dominate the other players. Cannot win alone, must form allies and convince them to allow self to win! Topics include the schematic map, reverberation calculations, types of game (face-to-face, in-house, ‘zines, by email, online, gunboat diplomacy)

(3) Karel the Robot (Programming Skills)

Karel is a simple robot with less than a dozen instructions. That is too complex for us. We will make do with Three instructions. We will develop a program that will enable Karel to escape the classroom through the doorway. When Karel has left the room, we all go home. These sessions star Chris Greaves as “Karel The Robot”.

(4) SUBS machine (Programming Skills)

Van der Poel postulated a computer with only one instruction. Fifty years ago mainframe computers had 100 to 200 hard-wired instructions. RISC computers came along with fewer instructions.

Bt a computer with only one instruction? How useful could that be?

It turns out to be supremely useful on several fronts:-

(1) If memory is cheap, you can build a functioning microcomputer from parts ordered through the DEC handbook. NAND/NOR gates and the like.

(2) You can build an interpreter that takes in a hybrid of APL and FORTRAN and spits out a program that can be run on the SUBS machine. It follows that since you can simulate the SUBS machine in FORTRAN, you can run this single-instruction simulation on the single-instruction computer itself.

(6) The GWS and CYO’C ( Engineering Miracles )

The Goldfields Water Supply – an engineering miracle from 1900. learn how an engineer managed top make water run 340 MILES from Perth (at sea level) to Kalgoorlie (1,700 feet above sea level) by gravity.

Presented by Chris Greaves who was raised on this water supply.

(7) Turing Machines (Programming Skills)

The first path is the business of writing Turing Machines. You will solve problems in Unary, Binary, and Decimal notation. And why not write a Turing Machine to do arithmetic in Roman Notation?

The second path is the development of a full-fledged interpreter. Why not? I have developed an interpreter in Microsoft Word VBA, and you can do it too!

Along the way we will learn some of amazing history behind the origins of the stored-program digital computer technology that we take for granted today.

Step back in time tomorrow!

(9) Why your Paris trip was a Disaster (culture)

So, you thought you’d be like a real Parisian and sit on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées for two hours watching the scene but the waiter bumped you out of your seats five minutes after you had paid you bill?

So, people in your local café seemed sullen, when you’d heard that they would be friendly?

You loved the subway, and spent the entire two weeks underground because you didn’t understand the logic behind the bus route numbering?

And you never enjoyed the ten thousand square kilometres of the Île de France and the Transilean network, nor any of the 5,000 suburban bus routes?

And to top it all off, although you learned French in High School, you still don’t know when to use “Bonjour” and when to use “Bonne Journée”.

Hah! Dis donc!

Tiens!
